For those that have found themselves caught in it, slowness while you search the expansive World Wide Web can be a tiring jaunt.  You know, that website that seems to take thirty seconds to load in, or pauses when you click between pages or images.  Well this new Google tool, named Page Speed Online, hopes to help the searcher out by giving those hints on how to speed up the experience on a particular site.  This is the brainchild of the smart folks at Google Labs, who set out to improve the area of speed on the Internet.

One might think that it would be a difficult thing to use, but in reality it is quite simple.  Go to the website and type in the address to the site that you want the tool to analysis.  For instance, click into the search box and type, www.espn.com.   Hit enter and Google goes off, formulating a list of helpful responses back to you with ideas to make your web viewing experience at that site quicker for you.

The nice thing is that when Page Speed Online returns the results to you, it does it in a manner than ranks them from highest to lowest in terms of their value for helping to speed up the webpage experience.  It also will produce a score for the website's speed overall, based on a 100 point scale scoring system.  For example, Helium.com produces an overall score of 82 out of 100 for speed.  You can then examine these highest, medium, and low priority suggestions and implement them if you choose to.

For those familiar with this type of speed tool, they would question what is really new about this product.  After all, speed analysis tools have been available on the internet for some time now.  Well there is an extra facet to this Google version, that being that you can use it to analyze performance of mobile websites as well.  That is something that other older speed tools are not going to be able to claim, at least not yet.

As mentioned above, Google is not just doing this out of the goodness of its heart.  After all, the faster things flow on the internet, the better it is for them and their revenue stream.  However it does work out for the consumer as well if they can take the recommendations and make their web viewing experience faster.
